Dunboy Castles of Ireland Pamela, November 19, 2023November 20, 2023 Both Dunboy Castles are a dream of mine to be a part of a paranormal investigation. The reason is that my Grandfathers were the keepers of these castles. One historical fact I have learned from my investigations of my family is that of my Grandfather, Sir Dermod “the Powdered” O’Sullivan, Lord Beara of Dunboy. He was the 11th Lord Of Beare and Bantry in Dunboy Castle, Munster, Castletown Bearhaven, County Cork, Ireland and he married Lady Julia MacCarthy in Ireland, daughter of Lord Donal MacCarthy and Lady Eleanor Fitzgerald. Dormod was born circa 1500 and the most famous story of him is regarding his death in 1549. In 1549, Dermod died while defending Dunboy Castle against Cromwell’s forces and during this battle, he accidentally blew himself up with gunpowder. Above is a depiction of the castle that was part of the Seige of Dunboy. This Dunboy Castle lays in ruins today but I am pretty certain, after all that has happened in this location, the spirits are restless. The ruins of Dunboy Castle Donal Cam O'Sullivan Beare The Famous Donal Cam O’Sullivan Beare The most famous of Irish history is that of my Great-Uncle, Dermod’s brother, Donal Cam O’Sullivan Beare, Prince of Beare, 1st Count of Berehaven. These brothers were the sons of Sir Donal “the Swarthy” O’Sullivan. I could give a huge history lesson here but I’m getting to the meat of this blog post. Donal was most notably known for the O’Sullivan March. After the Siege of Dunboy, Donal gathered his remaining followers and set off northwards on a 500-kilometre march with 1,000 of his remaining people, starting on 31 December 1602. Ireland reenacts this march yearly to this day. Donal, on July 16, 1618, had his throat cut in Madrid in Plaza de Santo Domingo, near the royal palace. As you can see, although this story is very short, there are many reasons for spirits to linger in an area that meant so much to the O’Sullivans. Below is a map depicting the Seige of Dunboy. The Seige of Dunboy As you can see, I have strong connections to my O’Sullivan history and have always been drawn to visiting there in hopes of connecting with my ancestors. I am not afraid to be used as “ghost bait” to help with this connection for anyone wanting to investigate these castles. Further dives into O’Sullivan’s history, it continues on into America. I am excited to learn more about other locations to visit. The last of the O’Sullivan name in my family goes back to my 4th Great-Grandmother, Sally Sullivan. My lineage follows from her to her father John Sullivan and follows the paternal path to the origins of the name. Side note: I have just learned of this book, The Ghost of Dunboy Castle and it has piqued my interest. Definitely on my to-buy list. One aspect of my personal style of paranormal investigating is learning about the history. I love bringing the stories to life. Accuracy and validation are very important to both of us.
